Avelo Airlines has reached a significant milestone, transporting its 10 millionth customer just five years after launching operations. The low-cost carrier achieved this volume in a remarkably short span since its first flight on April 28, 2021, positioning itself as a new entry in the American aviation market. Since beginning service, the airline has operated nearly 80,000 flights. The company reports industry-leading performance in reliability, including metrics for on-time arrivals, baggage handling, and completion factor performance. Avelo has also hired over 1,000 crew members, contributing to hundreds of direct and indirect jobs within the airport sector. The carrier has supported hundreds of local and state community organizations and events across its network.
Operations and Reach
Currently, Avelo serves 37 nonstop destinations across 15 states and two locations in Puerto Rico: Aguadilla and San Juan. The airline operates from smaller, less crowded airports in major metropolitan areas. This approach offers travelers a closer departure point to their homes, often resulting in savings on parking and other ground transportation costs. The focus on these secondary hubs allows the airline to maintain everyday low fares on nonstop routes. Avelo uses these secondary airports to provide convenient nonstop service and accessible fares for travelers.
Seating and Membership Options
Travelers can select from various seating options, including Stretch+ seats with extra legroom and blocked middle seats. The airline has a policy where children 14 and under are automatically seated with an accompanying adult at no extra charge. This policy aims to reduce travel costs and anxiety for families. Customers can also choose to enroll in Avelo PLUS, a membership program which offers exclusive benefits including immediate discounted fares, free priority boarding, and access to private fare sales. These benefits can be enjoyed by up to nine others traveling on a member’s itinerary.

Avelo also offers the Avelo Airlines World Elite Mastercard. Cardholders earn Avelo Cash back on purchases and receive perks like a free carry-on bag and priority boarding when used for travel on the airline. These benefits apply to everyone on the reservation. Recently, the airline launched this card to provide additional value to its frequent travelers.
While the airline celebrates rapid growth and a loyal customer base, the expansion of low-cost carriers into established hubs presents a complex challenge for legacy airlines. The ability to capture market share at major airports depends heavily on the willingness of those larger institutions to adjust their own pricing structures and operational models. If Avelo continues to replicate its success at new gateways, it may force a broader re-evaluation of pricing in the commercial aviation sector.
