Symi is an island that is rich in history and yet that history is hard to track down and record accurately. An island is a body of land surrounded by water. Often understated, today’s Corfu is an island of outstanding beaches, spectacular coastlines and scenic countryside. Continental islands may form through the weathering and erosion of a link of land that once connected an island to the mainland.
The Maho lived in the caves on the island and indeed today artifacts have been found that give evidence to this fact such as tools and pottery. There’s 15 islands to explore, but a must-see is Aitutaki. Four wheel drives are our mode of transport, and our little planes will take you to islands abundant with penguins, albatrosses and petrels that are there for you alone to discover and enjoy.
Only two resorts hug its white-sand fringed west coast, which is accessible by boat from the mainland port of Mersing (also the departure point for more distant Tioman). A ridge of rocks, coral, or sand rising from the ocean floor all the way to or near the ocean’s surface. On a clear day you can even glimpse the coast of Donegal in Ireland to the south-west. These five islands are the central group and during the summer months there is a ferry service making access much easier.
For example a kayak trip around the coast can take in some incredibly tranquil bays, where the rugged cliffs stand unchanged since the times of the Greek myths. Tsunamis and storms regularly erode at the fragile coral islands. We paused at little river cities along the way and walked upon their bushy dikes, and heard tales of overflows in flood seasons, when four feet or more of water islanded the houses.
