The sun-kissed deserts of Arabia are treasure-troves of myriad stories. From the vestiges of Arabian nights to the smoke unfurling from the intricately designed hookahs, beneath their urbane exteriors all seven Emirates carry their past with panache, especially Sharjah. HE Khalid Jasim Al Midfa, Director General, Sharjah Commerce and tourism development Authority (SCTDA), is one man, who can easily make you fall in love with the Emirate by painstakingly detailing Sharjah’s culture, heritage and ethos. Travelweb pans the camera to capture his passion for the land.
“In 1998 Sharjah was named the Arab cultural capital by UNESCO and by 2014 it became the capital of Islamic culture. In 2015 Arab Tourism Organisation has pronounced us as the capital of Arab tourism. We have become what we are today because of the vision His highness Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, the ruler of Sharjah, had,” says Al Midfa.
Culture, heritage, leisure and education are the four pillars that make Sharjah stand out from the other Emirates. And he says without cherishing the past, no country will have a future. Tourism according to him is showcasing the rich history and tradition every country beholds.
“Whatever we are offering in Sharjah is authentic in nature,” he insists. He believes Sharjah 2021, announced last week, would reinforce Sharjah’s position in the world market as a safe family destination. “We expect ten million visitors to Sharjah by 2021. Last year Sharjah had more than 2 million hotel guests out of which around 500 thousand were Russians. Around 38 per cent was from GCC and the rest came from sub continent and Far East. The potential that we see in new feeder markets is huge. This year we are focusing on China, India, CIS countries and Europe,” says Al Midfa.
