WIS provides car hire insurance for travellers

Oct 19 2015

Worldwide Insurance Solutions (WIS) recently launched Car Hire Excess insurance for travellers through the WIS Connectz B2B platform. The insurance is provided for UAE residents and is underwritten by Alliance Insurance, supported by Allianz Global Assistance and offered exclusively through the WISConnectz system from WIS approved travel agencies.

Jonathan Cooper, Managing Director & Founder, WIS, said, “This is a first for the travel agency sector here in the UAE to be able to offer this insurance plan to travellers who hire a car when they travel across the Middle East, Europe, Asia and beyond. Up till now, travellers did not have the chance to purchase this type of insurance cover unless this was direct from the car rental company.

“Many travellers just accept the car hire conditions, but they are unaware that they would be liable for some major costs if they have an accident. The standard insurance provided with a car hire covers any claims over the ‘excess’ and this is normally set at around USD1,500 (approximately AED5509). It does not cover any claims that fall below the excess and this would typically include minor claims, such as a small bump or scratch,” Cooper said.

Features of the policy

With a Car Hire Excess cover, the traveller has the chance to purchase specially developed insurance that allows for any excess the car hire company may raise to be covered in full up to a limit of USD4,000 while booking his holiday.

In addition, this special cover also allows for other mishaps such as when keys go missing, filling the car with wrong petrol, etc;, have to be addressed. As a bonus, cover is also provided against the theft of personal possessions providing cover for up to USD500.

“The launch of Car Hire Excess cover is a great first for the travel industry - and a real opportunity for travel agents to add extra value to their customers,” said Cooper.

Tie-up with DTTAG

Earlier this year, WIS also partnered with Dubai Travel and Tour Agents Group (DTTAG) to survey their members on the subject of travel insurance by gaining their views on a range of subjects, including the reasons why customers purchase travel insurance and the opportunity of further insurance sales.

Nusrat Aziz, Executive Director, WIS said, “It is important for us here at WIS to understand how travel agents approach travel insurance, what their customers are saying regarding the importance of insurance and how we can work together to improve insurance penetration.” In a survey conducted amongst the travel agents it has become evident that the possibilities of selling travel insurance in the Middle East are no less. The market survey stated that only 10 per cent of UAE travellers prefer buying insurance while travelling.

“It is also interesting to see that the main motivation that travel agents have to promote travel insurance is to provide their customers protection and extra value customer service. This survey and the detailed feedback support the views of WIS,” said Aziz.
